What Does the Bible Say About the Blood of Jesus?

Scripture calls it precious — the blood by which we are redeemed, forgiven, cleansed, and brought near to God. These are the verses on the blood of Jesus, quoted exactly and reflected on with reverence.

"How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" — Hebrews 9:14 (KJV)

The short answer

The Bible teaches that the blood of Jesus is precious beyond price — the means of our redemption and the cleansing of every sin. Through His shed blood we are forgiven, justified, brought near to God, and given victory over the accuser, anchored in Ephesians 1:7 and 1 John 1:7.

From the first sacrifice in Eden to the Lamb slain at Calvary, the whole Bible flows toward a single fountain: the blood of Jesus Christ. It is not a grim subject but a glorious one, for by that blood the guilty are made clean and enemies are made friends of God. Scripture never treats it casually; it calls the blood precious, and rests our whole salvation upon it. Below are eight passages, quoted exactly from the King James Version, gathered around the questions the blood of Jesus answers.

What does the blood of Jesus do for sin?

The first work of the blood is toward our sin — not merely covering it, but cleansing it and setting us free.

"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" — Ephesians 1:7 (KJV)

Redemption means to be bought back and set free. Our forgiveness is measured not by the smallness of our sin but by the riches of His grace — a supply that never runs dry, purchased at the price of His blood.

"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." — 1 John 1:7 (KJV)

Notice the word "all." No sin is too dark, no stain too deep, for the blood of Jesus to cleanse. And it cleanses in the present tense — a continual washing for those who walk with Him in the light.

Why was blood necessary for our redemption?

God is holy, and sin is costly. The Scriptures explain why a price had to be paid, and why only one price was precious enough.

"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission." — Hebrews 9:22 (KJV)

The Old Testament sacrifices all whispered the same truth: forgiveness is not free of cost, even when it is free to us. Every lamb pointed forward to the Lamb whose blood would truly take sin away.

"Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:" — 1 Peter 1:18-19 (KJV)

No amount of silver or gold could ransom a soul. Only the precious blood of a spotless Lamb — Christ Himself — was of sufficient worth. Your redemption cost heaven its very best.

How does the blood of Jesus give us victory and peace?

The blood does more than wash the past; it secures the future. It justifies us before God and overcomes the accuser who condemns us.

"Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him." — Romans 5:9 (KJV)

To be justified is to be declared righteous before God — and it is His blood, not our performance, that justifies. If the hardest thing is already done, the promise of being saved from wrath through Him is doubly sure.

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." — Revelation 12:11 (KJV)

When the accuser points to your sin, the answer is not your goodness but the blood of the Lamb. Victory is won by pleading what Christ has done, and by a testimony that treasures Him above life itself.

What did Jesus say His blood would accomplish?

On the night before the cross, Jesus lifted the cup and told His disciples exactly what His blood was for. His own words interpret Calvary.

"For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." — Matthew 26:28 (KJV)

His blood inaugurates a new covenant — a new relationship between God and His people, sealed not in the blood of animals but in His own. It was shed "for many," and it was shed for the remission of sins.

"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins:" — Colossians 1:14 (KJV)

Here it is again, stated simply: redemption and forgiveness, both through His blood. The whole gospel can be held in this one short line — and it belongs to everyone who is in Christ.

Frequently asked questions

What does the blood of Jesus do?

The blood of Jesus redeems, forgives, cleanses, and justifies. Ephesians 1:7 says in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace (KJV). 1 John 1:7 adds that the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. Romans 5:9 promises that, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. In short, His blood does for us what nothing else could: it makes guilty people clean and welcomes them home to God.

Why was the shedding of blood necessary?

Scripture states plainly that without shedding of blood is no remission (Hebrews 9:22, KJV). Sin carries a real cost, and God in His justice does not simply overlook it. Throughout the Old Testament, the life given in sacrifice pointed forward to the one perfect sacrifice to come. Jesus offered His own precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot (1 Peter 1:19), paying the full price so that forgiveness could be given freely to us without justice being set aside.

"Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood," — Revelation 1:5 (KJV)
